Back to School Information

School begins for ALL students on August 10, through LaunchED.  Those who have registered for Face to Face will start on LaunchEd, and then join us in person beginning August 21.

See below for the most current information and updates.  Parents who are not receiving school updates via email are asked to email [email protected] .

Device Check-Out

for any students new to Howard will take place this Thursday, August 6, in a special drive through welcome event behind our school on Jefferson.  If students wish to use their own devices for the school year, they may do so.  We will also have student IDs for our new students, and planners available for our incoming sixth graders.  Students MUST be present in order to check out the device.

8:30-9:30- Last names A-C

9:30-10:30 Last names D-K

10:30-11:30 Last names L-R

11:30-12:30 Last names S-Z

Directions:  If arriving from the east, you will turn left onto Hyer (at our staff parking lot), and then right onto Jefferson.  If arriving from the west, you will turn right onto Hyer, and then right onto Jefferson.

Pull your car up as far as you can, and there will be staff members there to guide you.  From your car, you will notify our staff of your student’s name, and we will then locate the student ID, planner, and a device.  All items will be placed on a table and the student will then exit the car to pick up the items (pending weather).  Students will need to turn on the device and login while on the school’s network before leaving.  This is very important in order for the students to be able to access their school accounts once they are home.

Student Schedules

Our master schedule and student schedules were previously completed, but based on circumstances and needing to adjust to our new model, the school and student schedules are undergoing significant adjustments.  Our administration and counselors are working around the so that we can provide teachers with accurate teaching assignments, and our students with schedules that best meet their needs.    The number of changes required within the allotted time do present a challenge, so we want to prepare you for the possibility that student schedules are unfortunately still subject to change after this Friday when schedules are released.   We also ask for your understanding that counselors will not be highly accessible this week, as we need them to focus on getting scheduling changes completed in time for school to begin on August 10.

We will keep you updated in regards to our progress and truly appreciate your patience and understanding throughout this process.

Meet the Teacher (and school supply information)

Meet the Teacher this year will be a digital experience.  On Friday, by 4:00pm, we will send out via email, and make available on our website, a very special “Howard Beat:  Meet the Teacher Edition”.  In this newsletter, you will find a link to a principal welcome video, directions about how to view your student’s schedule, important information about the school year, and photos and bios of our teaching staff.  After 4:00pm, once students view their schedule, they will be able to login to their Canvas page in order to “virtually” visit their classrooms.  Teachers will have all of the information they would normally provide at a face to face Meet the Teacher event (including school supply lists- which we hope to keep to a minimum), as well as welcome videos and other resources.   For students who are new to Canvas, we will provide resources to support you.

Attendance during the First Nine Days

While we will be flexible with attendance during the first nine days of school, and students will not be penalized if they are unable to begin on August 10, we certainly encourage all students who are able to attend.  Teachers are working hard to create engaging opportunities for students to connect and to get comfortable with this new format of instruction.

No student will be marked absent until they have attended school for their first day of the year.  However, once a student logs in to their classes for their first day of school, we are then required to mark their attendance as present/absent.  However, there will be no negative ramifications for such absences (no truancy, etc.).

Howard Middle School Meal Grab & Go
If you plan to take advantage of getting school meals this school year and you are participating in LaunchEd, have no fear. We will have meals available beginning Monday, August 10th, and you can pick up every Monday from 4:30pm-6:00pm. The charges for these meals will depend on your child's free/reduced status from last year. If they qualified for free/reduced meals this will continue. If they were paid meals, your child's lunch account will be charged and you can place money on their account through www.schoolpay.com.

Important All Stars Update

We just received an update today that All Stars will unfortunately NOT be providing BEFORE school care at this time.  As far as we have been told, they do still plan on providing AFTER school care, but registration details are not yet available.  All questions regarding this program should be directed to their office, as they are managed through the City of Orlando and are a separate entity from the school.   https://www.orlandoasas.org/Home
